If you are looking for a budget friendly way to go to Nepal from Kathmandu this article is definitely for you! The way that I explain here is adventurous and joyful if you know how to have fun though. 🙂
The information about how to go to Kathmandu from Rishikesh or from India on the internet is very limited and unclear. With my own experience, I will try to clearly explain it with details.
-If you have a tight budget, the best way is to go Kathmandu by bus and train. This way will be tiring but it will full of experiences. -If you don’t want to waste your time on the road and don’t have any concern about your budget, buy your flight ticket at least 3-4 weeks before your travel. -If you buy your flight ticket in the last minute, flight ticket will cost around 400 American dollars.
How to go to from Rishikesh (India) to Nepal (Kathmandu) by train and bus?
1st Option :
In total, this trip takes 36 hours.
If you are in Rishikesh;
Rishikesh – Haridwar – Haldwani – Banbasa – Mahandranagar (Nepal) – Kathmandu
Rishikesh – Haridwar
By taxi or bus Duration : Approximately 45 min If it is a busy season in Rishikesh, leave Rishikesh at an early hour not to stuck in traffic. Cost: Bus – 20 INR
Haridwar – Haldwani
Two options: Bus or Train. Duration: Both last around 6-7 hours
Going By Train: It is difficult to find seat in the train during high season. I travelled in general class. It was extremely crowded, no place to seat, no place to even move your feet. I travelled while I stand for 7 hours in this train. It was hectic but full of experience. You can give it a try for once. Cost: 95 INR (train) Duration: 7 hours
Haldwani – Banbasa
Banbasa is border city in Indian side between India and Nepal. Bus: Duration: 3 hours. Cost: 130 INR
Banbasa – Mahendranagar:
Border! When you get off the bus in Banbasa, you will see people asking to take you to the border. You can either take a motorbike ride or tuktuk. I preferred motorbike. Motorbike: Duration: 30 min Cost: 200 INR
After getting your visa in the border, you will go to the first city which is Mahendranagar. By Tuktuk: Duration: 15 min. Cost: 30 Nepali Rupi
Mahendranagar – Kathmandu
You should take a bus. I got on the bus at 2.45 pm and I got off next day at 9.45 am in the morning. Duration: 19 hours. Cost: 1800 Nepali Rupi
In total, it takes 48 hours. Rishikesh – Delhi – Gorakhpur (Hindistan) – Sunauli (Nepal) – Kathmandu
Rishikesh – Delhi
By Bus: From Rishikesh bus station take a bus to Delhi. I took a lokal bus without AC. AC one costs 750 INR, local one without AC costs 165. Don’t need to spend your money. Frankly speaking , I didn’t see any difference between AC one and non AC one. Duration: 7 hours. Cost: 165 INR
Delhi – Gorakhpur
You can either go by bus or train. But to find a reserved seat in train is difficult. And I do not recommend general class one since this journey takes 12 hours. Bus: I don’t recommend local busses for this journey since it is 12hr of journey and they are not comfy for 12 hours of trip. I bought my ticket from a tourism agency. Duration : 12 hours. Cost: 1400 INR
Gorakhpur – Sunauli (Nepal)
Sunauli is border city in Nepali side. You should take a bus. Bus: Duration: 3 hours. Cost: 112 Nepali Rupi. To pass Sunauli border is easy. You will just walk for 5 min. You don’t need to take a tuktuk or motorbike as it is told in the first option.
Sunauli – Kathmandu
Take a bus directly in bus station in Sunauli. Duration: 11 hours. Cost: 560 Nepali Rupi
Rishikesh – Delhi – Kathmandu
As i told in previous option, you can go to Delhi from Rishikesh by bus. From Delhi to Kathmandu, you can take a direct bus. But this info is not written on the internet. You should go to Delhi and buy your ticket once you get there. Duration: 36 hours. Cost: 4800 Nepali Rupi
